Rovaniemi airport is, when measured in passenger volume, one of the busiest air traffic hubs in Finland and it is Santa Claus’ official airport. Distance to Ylitornio town centre 120 km.

Ylitornio is served by good road connections. Highway 21 bypasses the town centre on the west side and the main street, Alkkulanraitti, is in its immediate vicinity. The border crossing into Sweden is in the village of Aavasaksa, where local roads to Raanujärvi and Muurola via Mellakoski also start. Muurola is on the way to Rovaniemi, which is 115 kilometres away. The road to Tervola starts at Mellakoski. The highway connects Ylitornio to Tornio (65 km) and Pello (55 km). The town centre of Ylitornio is about 10 km distant from Matarenki, the municipal hub of Övertorneå on the Swedish side of the river.
