Kariniemi lived in 1913–1984. She published novels and youth novels in addition to numerous articles and short stories. She contributed to many newspapers and magazines and was a charter member of the Northern Writers’ Society. Her first book, the novel Poro-Kristiina (Reindeer Kristiina) was published in 1952. From 1944 to 1962, Kariniemi was married to Colonel Oiva Willamo, commander of the Lapland Border Guard.
