Annikki Kariniemi statue

A statue sculpted by Artist Professor Ensio Seppänen was erected in Aavasaksa in 1990. It honours the women of Lapland and the writer Annikki Kariniemi in particular. She was the first published female author from Lapland and one of the few women to write wilderness stories.

Kariniemi lived in 1913–1984. She published novels and youth novels in addition to numerous articles and short stories. She contributed to many newspapers and magazines and was a charter member of the Northern Writers’ Society. Her first book, the novel Poro-Kristiina (Reindeer Kristiina) was published in 1952. From 1944 to 1962, Kariniemi was married to Colonel Oiva Willamo, commander of the Lapland Border Guard.
